What is Thermography?
Thermography is simply a procedure utilizing an electronic camera to obtain an image of the infrared radiation (heat) coming from the surface of the skin. It is performed as an aid to detect abnormal temperature patterns, Thermography highlights areas of differing temperature patterns, or non-symmetrical patterns, which may be associated with underlying changes in the body. These images are meant to complement, not replace, evaluation and diagnosis by your healthcare provider.
Identification
Medical research has shown thermography to be helpful in the identifying:
-
Peripheral Nervous System Disorders
-
Metabolic Disorders
-
Repetitive Strain Injuries
-
Headaches, Neck and Back Problems
-
TMJ Conditions
-
Dental & Sinus Infections
-
Pain Syndromes such as fibromyalgia, myositis
-
ArthritisVascular Disorders (ex. Raynoud’s disease)
-
Soft Tissue Injuries
There are patterns detectable by thermograms that suggest any condition for which there is an alteration of nervous control of blood flow or circulation such as soft tissue injuries, diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, osteoarthritis, dental and sinus infections, breast implant rupture, strokes, thyroid inflammation or underfunction, gall-bladder and liver inflammation, lymph congestion, and melanoma.
Clinical correlation is always required.

The Thermography Scan and Report
The appointment takes place in a relaxed, peaceful & private room. The air may feel a bit cool at first as your body adjusts to room temperature before scanning. You will be lightly robed during this brief cooling process (about ten minutes). When it's time to take images, you'll gently disrobe only in areas being scanned so the surface temperature of skin can acclimate with the room.
Obtaining a thermographic image is much like having your picture taken. There is no direct contact between you and the camera, no radiation, no injection, nothing to drink. The procedure is completely non- invasive and the camera simply records the natural infrared heat your body gives off.
Your Individualized Report
Your information is uploaded through a secure server and reviewed by a medical doctor who provides an interpretation of your images, similar to how imaging specialists review other types of scans. This information is intended to support not replace, your ongoing care with your healthcare provider.
A color printed report and images are generally available within 3-7 business days. Your images will be read by Dr. Gregory Melvin who is trained and certified to interpret thermograms by the American College of Clinical Thermography. Dr. Melvin will analyze the results and offer personalized insights and wellness-oriented suggestions that you can discuss with your healthcare provider as part of your overall plan for staying in balance.
Many clients choose to establish a baseline with the initial scan and then schedule a follow-up scan within 4 to 6 months and periodically after that. Scans can be performed more often if you and your provider feel it's appropriate.
Digital infrared thermal imaging (DITI) can offer additional information about temperature patterns in the body and is meant to complement, not replace, standard breast health screenings such as mammograms and clinical exams. It has limitations and cannot guarantee detection of any condition.
Upon scheduling, please review the preparation instructions and complete the Breast Health Intake if applicable.
